Experience

Emmelie’s practice focuses on European and Belgian competition law. Her day-to-day work includes handling competition law matters before the European Commission and the Belgian Competition Authority, as well as advisory work for a wide range of businesses. She regularly represents clients in court proceedings on competition law, both at the EU and the Belgian level. Emmelie focuses specifically on abuse of dominance matters, and horizontal agreements and cartels. Her experience extends to merger control and distribution agreements in which areas she frequently assists clients.

Emmelie is a trainer within the compliance team of Faros. In this context, she develops tailor-made competition law compliance trainings for Belgian and international businesses.

In addition to her competition law practice, Emmelie advises clients on general business law matters, and practices general litigation, with a particular focus on arbitration. Emmelie has particular expertise in the retail sector, as well as in media, IT and pharma.

Emmelie started her legal career at the Washington DC office of Crowell & Moring, after which she moved to its Brussels office. In 2018, she joined contrast. Emmelie is a proud co-founder of Faros.

Emmelie is a member of the Brussels bar.

Education

Emmelie holds a bachelor and master’s Law degree from the University of Antwerp. She also obtained an LL.M. from the University of Virginia (USA).

Publications

Emmelie regularly publishes in the field of competition law. One of her latest publications is a practical handbook on Belgian competition law in the “Bos door de bomen” series of which she is a co-author. She was also editor and co-author of the Horizontal Toolbook regarding the new EU legislation on horizontal agreements (2024). In addition, Emmelie also regularly publishes articles on competition law in leading journals, such as ICLG (EU chapter on Vertical Agreements and Dominant Firms), Revue de Droit Commercial and Competitio.
